The Only Time Bribery is Morally Correct

By Karen Punch

Original cover: The Only Time Bribery is Morally Correct

Can I tell you a secret?

I accept bribes… really big ones, for that matter.

Nah, I’m joking… certainly not big ones.

And I’m no criminal, and I’m not hurting anyone.

But it doesn’t change the fact that I love my bribes.

The evidence is all over my house now…So much so that it’s starting to get a little overwhelming.

Let me tell you how it all started.

So, I enjoy helping my colleagues.

Usually, it’s in the form of confidential advice, a good book to read, sometimes hard-hitting truths, empathetic listening, or positive encouragement… you know that type of thing.

They’d often return to say thank you or sometimes just to give me an update, and other times, to ask for more real talk.

But recently?

They’ve started coming bearing gifts.

Gifts of:

  • Bottles of wine.
  • Exquisite perfumes.
  • Spa session vouchers.
  • Amazing chocolate treats.
  • Even fashion accessories.

And I won’t lie, a gal like me does appreciate being pampered.

So just this last month, I decided to take stock.

I investigated my fridge, and let me tell you:

🍫 One shelf was dedicated to chocolate.

🍷 My wine cooler was stocked like a boutique bar.

🌸 And the perfume collection? Whew!

Wait a minute, when did all of that arrive?

The Principle at Play: Reciprocity

That little story may sound lighthearted, but it reveals one of the most powerful psychological forces in human behavior.

Reciprocity.

The idea that when someone gives to you, you feel compelled to return the favor.

Not out of obligation but out of instinct.

Dr. Robert Cialdini, in his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, explains how this principle influences everything from buying behavior to workplace dynamics.

  • It’s why people tip better after a free mint.
  • It’s why a free sample at the supermarket leads to unexpected purchases.
  • It’s why the small favors we give (even unintentionally) often come back with compound interest.

The moment I gave value freely, through guidance, encouragement, hard truths, or perspective…

I unknowingly activated reciprocity.

And the result?

Not just gifts but:

  • Trust.
  • Access.
  • Goodwill.

And yes, influence.

What This Means for Your Business

Reciprocity doesn’t just work in friendships.

It’s one of the smartest ways to build a brand and attract ideal clients, especially online.

But here’s the catch: most people online are just pitching.

No warmth. No generosity. No value first.

So, when you show up giving, not grabbing, you immediately stand out.

That’s why smart founders and executives today are building lead magnets, not just to “capture emails,” but to spark reciprocity.

Here’s how you do it:

  • You teach.
  • You give first.
  • You solve a pain.
  • You make someone feel seen.

And in return?

  • You earn trust.
  • You earn permission.
  • You earn the next step in the relationship.

Your LinkedIn Profile Is Your First Lead Magnet

And while we’re on the subject…

Here’s the mistake most founders and execs make:

They create content, even lead magnets, without realizing their LinkedIn profile is the first thing people see.

And if you don’t believe me, just Google your name.

It’s the:

  • Storefront before the product.
  • Test of “Can I trust this person?”
  • Handshake before the conversation.

If your profile leaks credibility, no amount of free value will stick.

You’ll be remembered… and avoided.

That’s where I come in.

Final Thought

Reciprocity isn’t a tactic.

It’s a quiet revolution in how business is built today.

It starts with giving generously, and that leads to influence.

And if done right?

You’ll wake up one day with a fridge full of chocolate, a phone full of leads, and a business that runs on trust.
