“My goodness. He’s just a rude and unprofessional man.”
I could feel the frustration in Nadia’s voice.
She told me about a prospective client she had brought to the office and, by proximity, had introduced to Sean.
Sean was one of those colleagues everyone “liked.”
Easygoing, charismatic, charming, and well positioned in the company socially.
He had worked there for more than five years and had built a solid reputation.
But under that warmth sat something else…. Something sinister, ambitious, and sharp.
A sharklike persona… definitely someone to watch carefully.
Nadia stepped away briefly to finalize paperwork, but when she returned, her client said he had to leave to attend to urgent matters.
So, she walked him to the parking lot, still wondering why his demeanor had changed so quickly.
Hours later, she received an email stating he would be “taking his business elsewhere,” leaving her no explanation or feedback.
And just like that… she had lost potential business.
She knew something definitely had happened when this client was left with Sean.
Nadia trusted her intuition, knowing for sure that something was off.
After tapping into the same network that connected her to the client in the first place, she uncovered the truth.
Sean had taken her absence as an opportunity to undermine her.
He told the client she lacked experience and that working with him directly would be safer.
The client felt uncomfortable, so he left.
Sean’s reaction when confronted privately was simple:
“These things happen, Nadia. Don’t take it too seriously.”
That was when the silence broke.
Character Always Cashes Out Eventually
While it seemed like Sean may have won the moment.
Nadia won the narrative.
The difference?
Character.
In his book, The Speed of Trust, Stephen Covey writes:
Trust is the one thing that affects everything you do.
When trust is present, things move faster, deals close easier, and meetings feel lighter.
When trust is broken, everything becomes heavy.
Sean was playing a short-term game, but Nadia was building a reputation.
And reputations pay long after strategic sabotage stops working.
The Personal Cost of Silent Corrosion
People assume sabotage happens loudly, but it rarely does.
It happens in:
- A subtle inference.
- A casual comment.
- A well-timed suggestion.
But here’s the real problem:
The one who sabotages others slowly erodes trust in themselves.
Even the people who “like” them start to watch them differently.
They start to recognize a pattern in their behavior.
Your teammates may be able to survive a performance shortcoming.
But they rarely can survive a deep character flaw such as Sean’s.
Because opportunity may reopen its doors to someone who stumbled.
But it rarely reopens to someone who cannot be trusted.
Leadership Reputation Is Built in Rooms You Are Not In
Nadia took the harder road.
She did not react, retaliate, or try to smear Sean to make herself look better.
Instead, she went directly to the client.
She owned her value, clarified the misunderstanding, and rebuilt the relationship based on transparency.
That single choice is where leadership maturity begins.
Because leadership reputation is not determined in the meeting where you speak.
It is determined in the conversations and impressions taking place when you are not present.
That is where your brand truly lives.
And that is where most leaders are underperforming today.
From Chaos to Cash
Let’s pull this into your world.
The same way certain colleagues quietly rewrite your reputation in real life, the internet is doing the same every second you are asleep.
People search your name, land on your profile, and make a decision in five seconds flat.
They decide:
- Whether you are credible.
- Whether you are senior enough.
- Whether you are someone worth speaking to.
Your LinkedIn profile is the first boardroom you walk into every day, and if it is unclear, empty, outdated, or vague, you are silently losing opportunities in rooms you never even knew you were in.
This doesn’t happen because you lack competence.
Rather, it happens because perception sets the tone before your track record ever gets the chance to speak.
